While interesting, these images have very little to do with the OP’s picture. 2011 was our biggest test since 1973 of the Mississippi flood protection system, which is different from the surge protection that failed during Katrina. 2011 saw the opening of Birds Point, Morganza Spillway, and the Bonnet Carre Spillway (which is visible in the picture). In addition, two new structures at Old River were put to the test after Old River very nearly failed in 1973. A breach in the Mississippi River levee within the New Orleans metro region would be catastrophic and would make New Orleans’ Katrina damage look not so bad.
A breach in Old River would be indescribable.
